The Benjamin & Lois Paul Fund for Tz'utujil Students
This fund was created in memory of the Pauls to honor their more than 50 years of social science research centered in San Pedro la Laguna. The Pauls were so beloved by the Tz’utujil Maya of San Pedro that they named the community school in their honor.
Our scholarships reach out to the area behind the mountains of San Pedro to provide support for Tz’utujil young people of Chicacao and San Miguel Panan in Suchitepéquez to attend school in San Pedro and elsewhere. Thus far we have assisted seven students from this area and identified 26 more who are qualified and in need of assistance. Our challenge is to work in collaboration with our contributors and other organizations and to find the funds necessary to make these dreams of education a reality.

The Tz’utujil speaking region of Guatemala encompasses most of the Department of Sololá, including the villages around Lake Atitlán like San Pedro la Laguna, and some of the Department of Suchitepéquez, particularly the municipios of Chicacao and San Miguel Panan. This area is on the Pacific coastal plain and is less well known than the Lake. It is also more neglected and less well supplied with services like schools and clinics.
