Jacaltenango Program

MEF supports secondary school students in this remote town in Guatemala’s western highlands. Our colleagues who monitor the students report that most of the program’s graduates are now teaching in Maya communities. They express their thanks to the donors and write:

...Jacaltenango is a distant community from the major centers (where access to education is a better possibility) ...With the scholarship program many poor families are given hope who are now dreaming of obtaining a teaching degree. With its focus on vocational training, the program helps students and their families and communities more directly. As the students obtain teaching degrees, they apply for jobs from government and NGOs and thus return to their communities and promote their own culture. People want to see their own children practice their languages and culture at school. This is only possible with bilingual teachers who share the same indigenous cultures and world views...
