Scholarship Program for University Students (Mexico)

In Chiapas, MEF’s core program of university scholarships is administered through three partner organizations, Sna Jtz’ibajom, FOMMA, and Productores Alternativos de la Selva. Women and students from remote areas are given preference, and MEF support is about $180 a month. Once a student is accepted, MEF commits to continue that support throughout her or his university career. Students need to show good grades and steady progress and must attend periodic meetings or help with the programs of the Mexican partners that monitor their progress.

For its indigenous population, Chiapas is one of the poorest states in Mexico. Public education is not without cost and education beyond the most basic levels is very difficult for Maya young people to achieve. Students tell us they cannot carry out their studies without the financial support of these scholarships. MEF student Carla Hilaria L. S. reported about a recent student project: “...some students were not able to participate in the fieldwork for lack of money needed to go to the community...” MEF scholarships enable students to overcome the economic hurdles that stand in the way of accessing higher education.

We receive regular calls from Mexico asking for help. The hard part is when we have to say that we don’t have the funds. Accepting a student often means a five or six year commitment and MEF will not start supporting a student and then drop her or him for a lack of money. Your gift means so very much.
