Workshops, Theater, Arts and Mayan Publications

MEF has had a long, productive collaboration with our two Mexican NGO partners, Sna Jtz’ibajom and FOMMA. These groups came into being under the direction and support of Dr. Robert Laughlin and his wife Mimi Laughlin, and they have developed into vital Maya organizations concerned with writing, and the creation, production and performance of culturally relevant, often controversial and courageous plays. They, and particularly Sna Jtz’ibajom, have become internationally recognized for the quality and the impact of their work, including the transcription of Mayan texts that otherwise might be lost. Both groups engage in theater work, Sna also produces radio broadcasts in Mayan languages. And FOMMA, with its concentration on Maya women’s issues, offers bakery, catering, sewing, and other skill workshops for women and a nursery and childcare for their children.
