Programa de Becas Mayas - Scholarship Program
(Guatemala and Mexico)

MEF’s principal goal with Maya students is to encourage their pursuit of secondary school and university degrees. We believe that higher education will give students more opportunities in their societies and will enable them make a difference in their communities and nations.

MEF’s core program of university scholarships for Maya students in Guatemala and Mexico continues with 80 students. Women and girls, and students from remote areas are given selection preference. MEF support is about US$150 per month for each university-level student. Once a student is accepted, MEF commits to continue that support throughout his or her university career. Students need to show steady progress, good grades, and must attend periodic meetings or help with the programs of FEPMaya and the two Chiapan NGOs, FOMMA or Sna Jtz’ibajom.

University students in Guatemala City. January 2003

Twenty-two Maya students are receiving support for vocational and university education in Chiapas, one of the poorest states of Mexico, and other parts of Mexico as well. FOMMA and Sna Jtz’ibajom supervise the students and help with the selection and interview process. MEF, in turn, collaborates and supports several projects of these two grassroot non-profit organizations including their indigenous language projects.

Students tell us how they cannot carry out their studies without the financial support of their scholarships. MEF student Carla Hilaria L. S. says about a recent study project: “...some students were not able to participate in the fieldwork for a lack of money needed to go to the community...” The scholarships enable students to overcome the economic hurdles that stand in their way to higher education.

Since we receive more applications than we can fund, we hope that you will become a sponsor for one or more students at $150 per month. Education and helping someone have access to it is a good investment of your support.

We get regular calls and e-mails from Mexico and Guatemala asking for help. The hard part is when we have to say no. Accepting a student to the program often means a five- to six-year commitment. MEF will not start supporting a student and then drop her or him for a lack of funds.

We thank those of you who already sponsor one or more students. Please help us assist more students. Your gift to MEF will make a vital difference to a student in Guatemala or Mexico.
